Shooting video with a camera that's primarily designed for stills can require a lot of work: apart from all the aspects that affect photography and that have been already discussed (exposure, DoF, etc), there are other parameters to think about, and some important additional rules.

It can be much easier to use a videocamera to shoot video, but if you want the best image quality, with control over depth of field, you need a camera with a big sensor. All the consumer videocameras, and most pro videocameras, use small sensors, like the ones in point-and-shoot stills cameras. The difference between the image delivered by these videocameras and the image that you can get from a big sensor camera is just like the difference in stills between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR.
